DC Universe Casting & Directing Announcements

DC Comics LogoWarner Bros. and DC dropped a bomb this morning by announcing their official movie slate for their own Cinematic Universe. But there was more than just official titles being slated to dates. Who is playing Aquaman (officially)? Who has been cast to play the Flash? Who is directing Justice League and Justice League 2? Who is directing Suicide Squad?

For months now, it’s been rumored, speculated, and everything else but ‘officially confirmed that Jason Momoa is playing Arthur Curry aka Aquaman. Well even though we all knew it was true, it’s now official as WB has announced that Jason Momoa will be portraying the King of Atlantis is multiple DC movies over the next so many years.

He is rumored to have a pretty significant part in Batman V Superman, leading to a solo movie on July 27th, 2018. Many have even believed that seeds of his arrival were planted in Man of Steel, hopefully leading to Aquaman becoming a huge part of the DCU.

Since The CW announced that they were bringing The Flash to their television network, alongside Arrow – it’s been in question whether or not Flash would be included in this DC Universe that WB and DC are building. For a long time now, we’ve all wondered why they wouldn’t included one of the Justice League’s biggest and most important characters in Barry Allen. That’s okay, because it’s become official that Flash will be a part of the movie universe, and a casting announcement was made!

The Flash has officially been announced to hit theaters on March 23rd, 2018, just four months after the first Justice League movie. Along with that, it was shockingly announced that Ezra Miller (We Need to Talk About Kevin and The Perks of Being a Wallflower) has been cast to play the Flash in WB and DC’s universe. This goes along the lines of the WB/DC’s ‘out of left field’ casting they have made for their universe. Affleck as Batman, Gadot as Wonder Woman, and Eisenberg as Luthor have all left more than just a few pondering about the choice.

As for Miller, ever since seeing him in The Perks of Being a Wallflower, I’ve known this guy has incredible raw talent. He will be a mainstay in Hollywoof for a very long time, but I can’t help but wonder why him? For me personally, it just doesn’t make sense. If they are going to go with Barry Allen over Wally West or Bart Allen, this casting is the one out of all of them that just doesn’t make sense. Nothing against Miller as he’s incredibly diverse and talented, but does he fit the part? I hope what WB/DC saw him is right because I want to be completely wrong on this one as the Flash is one of my personal favorite characters.

Now the question is, which character arc will they be going with?

Along with these casting announcements, it was also announced that Man of Steel and Batman V Superman director Zack Snyder will in fact be in the chair for Justice League and Justice League 2. We all thought he would be in charge for the first JL movie, but we didn’t really expect for the sequel since there has been nothing on it until now. This move basically makes Snyder the Joss Whedon of the DC Cinematic Universe, as he will be in the directors chair for three out of the first five movies and in the universe until at least 2019. If all goes to hell (which I highly doubt these movies will), Snyder will for sure be the one to blame.

It was also announced that the rumor of David Ayer being in charge for the Suicide Squad movie is in fact true. Along with that, WB also stated that they are in contact with four ‘A-list’ actors for roles in the movie, which is a pretty good sign. Suicide Squad is the first movie to come after BVS, most likely meaning that this will be Ayer’s next big project.

As for the choice of Ayer for this movie, it’s a great choice. Ayer’s dark, gritty, and hardcore style will fit a movie about a team of super villains perfectly. Now the only thing I and others can hope for is that the correct super villains are chosen (Harley Quinn), and that it will eventually tie in to the overall DC Universe.

Suicide Squad will be released on August 5th, 2016 directed by David Ayer.

Justice League opens on November 17th, 2017 directed by Zack Snyder.

The Flash will open on March 23rd, 2018 starring Ezra Miller.

Aquaman is set to open on July 27th, 2018 starring Jason Momoa.

Justice League 2 has a release date of June 14th, 2019 directed by Zack Snyder.

  1. I think this is very informative and lays out the information very nicely. Thank you. Now the only problem is waiting for 3 more years until we see the Justice League on the big screen. Followed. 🙂
