Robert Downey Jr in final negotiations for Captain America 3 – Civil War Story line?

Captain America 3 is quickly shaping up to be the BIGGEST solo superhero film that Marvel Studios has ever produced. The success of The Winter Soldier (Cap 2) was beyond what anyone expected, and it’s that success which has made the untitled follow up a highly anticipated one. Directors Joe and Anthony Russo are returning to direct a script by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely. While the Russo brothers briefly teased who would appear in Cap 3,  “I can’t divulge who is going to be in the film, but I think fans are going to freak out when they hear about it,” I don’t think anybody expected the name Robert Downey Jr to be who they were referring to.

That’s right! According to a Variety exclusive, Tony Stark himself has signed on for Captain America 3. Okay the site actually states that he’s in final negotiations for the role. I don’t mean to jump ahead of myself, but I want this to be official so badly. Variety claims that Downey will get a $40 million payday plus some back end pay should Cap 3 outperform The Winter Solider’s $710 million World Wide total, which sounds very much like a typical Downey-Marvel deal. This news makes the rumored Civil War story line even more of a possibility for the film’s main plot.

Civil War story line sees Captain America and Iron Man against each other thanks in part to the government’s Superhero Registration Act. The Registration Act forces any with superhuman abilities to reveal their identities, and act as a police force when called upon from the U.S. government. While Stark supports the program, Rogers doesn’t because it interferes with civil liberties. Sides begin to form between those who do and do not favor the program, and it’s Rogers and his followers who go on the run.

This story line puts Tony Stark in a sort of villain like role, because from a certain point of view he is turning on these superheros in favor of the government’s intentions. Which is probably what drew Robert Downey Jr to continue his run as the Billionaire/Superhero character, because it expands the character and gives it more drama which is something Downey has expressed interest in. Should the Civil War story line happen we can be sure to have more characters introduced between Avengers: Age of Ultron and superhero solo films being introduced in Marvel’s Phase 3 (Ant-Man, Doctor Strange, Black Panther, Ms. Marvel, maybe a Spider-Man appearance?).

At the moment, Marvel Studios will neither deny or confirm this news, and why would they? Part of Marvel’s success goes to having a plan and making sure the pieces are set and in place for the future. The Civil War story line and RDJ’s involvement are highly likely to (will) happen, but have yet to be confirmed. Once we hear confirmation from Marvel or Downey’s reps, I’m sure the contract will have been signed for some time now.

As for Robert Downey Jr joining Chris Evans for Captain America 3. What a way to make an already highly anticipated solo film even bigger, especially with Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice releasing March 25, 2016, just a few months prior to Captain America 3‘s May 6, 2016 release date. We all remember the short lived face off between the two films having the same release date. Imagine if they still had the same dates and neither planned on moving. What a way to even the playing field I think.
