According to schmoesknow.com there have been some new plot details released about the upcoming ‘Fantastic Four’ reboot, coming in 2015.
Two of the characters of the ‘Fantastic Four’, Sue Storm/Invisible Woman and Johnny Storm/Human Torch, are brother and sister. The actors playing these roles are Kate Mara and Michael B. Jordan, respectively. Now those who know the characters know they are Caucasian in the comics and generally it is not a big deal if a movie studio decides to change the race of a character in the movie, compared to the source material. However, the problem with this situation is that they hired one white actress to play Sue Storm and one black actor to play Johnny Storm.
Changing the race aside, a lot of us have been wondering how they are going to explain how these characters are siblings, when they clearly have different ethnic backgrounds. Well, we may very well have our answer with this recent report from Schmoes Know. According to the movie website (which I highly recommend) Kate Mara’s Sue Storm is the sibling that is going to be adopted by Michael B. Jordan’s (Johnny Storm’s) family in the movie. This is very interesting because most people assumed that adoption was going to be the explanation as to how they are still siblings. However, a lot of us thought it would be the other way around, with Sue’s parents adopting Johnny.
I personally think this is a genius move by the people in charge at FOX or whomever made this decision. It is so easy to just have a white family adopt a black kid and raise him in their household, we’ve seen that in movies before and it wouldn’t have been bad, just the predictable thing. They decided to switch it up and have the white child be the adopted one and I’m curious to see how the relationship between the two siblings is changed, due to this major departure from the comics.
Now there were a few more details regarding the plot of this movie but I felt like the Storm’s siblings explanation was the most relevant, since people have been wondering how they were going to go about that. Other details include their powers coming from a portal to another dimension, rather than an outer space mission gone wrong. Also, the movie is said to be very character driven. This is a good sign because a good movie starts with good characters and if they take the time to focus on building the character development, then it will make all the action sequences and powers that much better.
‘The Fantastic Four’ (2015) was already one of my most anticipated movies coming out in the next couple of years and hearing all of this news is sweet sweet music to my hears. I love all of these plot details and the more information we get about this film, the more and more it looks like it is going to be great. From the director Josh Trank (Chronicle), to the amazing cast (includes Miles Teller, Jamie Bell & Toby Kebbell) and the writer Simon Kinberg (X-Men DOFP) I have no doubt in my mind that this movie will be good and turn around the film franchise perception of ‘The Fantastic Four’. Thank you Schmoes Know for all the details!
