Matthew McConaughey won’t return for Magic Mike XXL (Update)

I had not a doubt in my mind that Magic Mike would be a hit when released in theaters. A film featuring male strippers which starred Channing Tatum and Matthew McConaughey, you can be sure females everywhere would buy tickets, which they did. The film grossed $167 million worldwide on a $7 million budget. Shortly after a sequel was announced, Channing Tatum announced that the entire cast would be returning also. Unfortunately, and not surprisingly that won’t turn out to be entirely true. As Gregory Jacobs, director for the sequel Magic Mike XXL has confirmed that the Academy Award winner won’t be reprising his role as Dallas.

It’s unknown as to exactly why this is the case, but my guess is that an actor like McConaughey simply did the first film for fun after reading and liking the script. The actor did just win an Academy Award and had a monster year last year with films like Mud, Dallas Buyers Club, and even a memorable small role in The Wolf of Wall Street. You can be sure that studios are lining up to work with him.

Don’t get too discouraged on this sequel ladies, it’s very much still coming with filming on the sequel already taking off. Director Jacobs teased that the plot will have characters from the first film traveling and doing what they do. The director even mentioned that there will be new cast members joining the sequel, and knowing the type of film that Magic Mike XXL is, I’m sure they’ll be some casting decisions to be delighted about. What if Dwayne Johnson took over Kevin Nash’s role in the first film as the new Tarzan, how would you feel about that? I’m certainly not the demographic for this kind of film, but I acknowledge the potential and success that this sequel can have.

UPDATE: Dealine has reported that Jada Pinkett Smith has joined the cast of Magic Mike XXL, she will be playing a club owner. Also joining the cast (The Wrap) is Amber Heard (Never Back Down) and Andre MacDowell (Groundhog Day).

Magic Mike XXL opens in theaters on July 1st, 2015
