Most of us know that Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye almost made it into Captain America: The Winter Soldier as the writers really wanted him in the film. In fact, he was in early drafts to be in a good chunk of the film, but with the focus on Captain America, Black Widow, Nick Fury, and the introduction of Winter Soldier and Falcon – he was scratched to keep the script and movie from feeling to overwhelming. That might change this time around as a new rumor has come out for Captain America 3.
We haven’t seen Hawkeye since the Battle of New York in
The Avengers. We have all been wondering where he’s been and what he’s been up to. We figured we would here something when we all got to see The Winter Soldier earlier this year, but nothing. Then we all heard that he was supposed to join the fight alongside Cap, Widow, Fury, and Falcon – but was unfortunately cut for the reasons above.
Now, Jeremy Renner has let it be known that there are talks and ‘rumblings’ about having Hawkeye in Captain America 3 alongside Cap, Falcon and others. Renner had this to say while talking with Collider:
“There are rumblings of Captain America 3. I don’t know what’s going to happen there. I’ve got to find the time, man (laughs). I’m trying to stay home and I can’t.”
This is an interesting piece of news. Steve Roger’s is a man out of time right now as his story started in the 1940’s, and everyone he knew or loved (minus Peggy Carter and an enhanced Bucky Barnes) have died. With Black Widow and Hawkeye being the only two characters without solo franchises right now, it makes pretty good sense to insert them into the Captain America franchise where he needs new allies and friends. Not to mention that these movies can slowly dig into both of their pasts (as The Winter Soldier did just a little bit with Widow).
The Winter Soldier (re)introduced Winter Soldier and Falcon so it’s a big giant safe bet that they will both be back. But the third installment to the solo franchise might see an ex-S.H.I.E.L.D. agent switcheroo, as Hawkeye might have a supporting role in Cap 3 just like Black Widow’s presence was a crucial part of The Winter Soldier. Plus, once we watch The Avengers: Age of Ultron next May, the Captain America/Hawkeye team-up might make complete sense after we see where they end up at the end of the film.
Personally, this some awesome news. I for one believed that Hawkeye was going to be on the chopping block in A2 next spring just because there is only so much that character can do. But he is one of my favorite characters and I want to see more of Renner in the role. It’s great news to see that Marvel may be expanding his MCU role, as he greatly deserves it. I am one that believes that having Cap, Hawkeye, and Falcon together would be one hell of a trio. Hawkeye could add some fantastic depth to a Marvel film that we haven’t see from his character yet, just as Anthony Mackie’s Falcon did in The Winter Soldier.
On a side note, what does this mean for Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow? Let’s just ponder for a minute. We know that Marvel is very, very, very high on Scarlett Johansson and her character – they would keep her forever if they could (they just might). And after her unbelievable role and performance in The Winter Soldier, she is now a mainstay character who everyone wants to see. With this rumor now floating around that Hawkeye might take Widow’s spot alongside Captain America (this time around at least), does this finally mean that Marvel could quite possibly be prepping and developing a Black Widow standalone movie for Johansson?
It’s certainly time for a Marvel female-led superhero film as the first 13 have been all male leads. And from Renner’s comments, there is no indication that Widow won’t be in Captain America 3. But bringing Renner into the film could be Marvel’s way of keeping up the Avenger members movie connection while also keeping Johansson’s contract open for that Black Widow standalone film we have all been waiting for.
What’s for sure is that we’ll get to see Captain America, Black Widow, and Hawkeye together again in The Avengers: Age of Ultron which will be released on May 1st, 2015. Directed by Joss Whedon starring Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Scarlet Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Cobie Smulders, Samuel L. Jackson, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, Don Cheadle, Anthony Mackie, Haley Atwell (rumored), Josh Brolin (rumored), Paul Bettany, James Spader, and Thomas Kretschmann.
Captain America 3 has a May 6th, 2016 release date. Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo starring Chris Evans, Sebastian Stan, and Anthony Mackie.
