Today comingsoon.net reports that Evangeline Lilly has joined Pual Rudd in San Francisco to begin shooting Marvel’s Antman. Along with that news comes a few pictures posted by Lilly herself which reveals a new look for her role as Hope Van Dyne, the daughter of Hank Pym and Janet Van Dyne. Check one out below!
This new haircut reminds me of some of the recent depictions of Wasp on Avengers animated shows. I pulled a clip from youtube featuring Janet Van Dyne as the Wasp in Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, the animated series previously playing on the Disney channel. Check out the Wasp in action and see how the short hair is similar to Lilly’s.
Comic book fans know that in the original comics Hank Pym and Janet Van Dyne were Antman and The Wasp, two of the founding members of the Avengers in the comics. It seems like Marvel is going in a different direction with their movie universe rather than sticking to the source material, and rightfully so. Comic book movies are not supposed to be a direct adaption of the source material but rather a story told in the form of a movie to fit the big screen. With that being said it is no surprise that Marvel is going with a different take on the Antman story.
Earlier in the year we found out that instead of focusing on the original Antman Hank Pym, Marvel will begin with telling story of Scott Lang (Paul Rudd’s character), who in the comics eventually takes on the Antman mantel after stealing Pym’s suit. This will come into play in the movie as well with Michael Douglas playing an older, seasoned Hank Pym who is willing to pass on the Antman identity to a younger candidate.
It has already been announced that Lilly will be playing Pym’s daughter named Hope Van Dyne and I doubt that Marvel is going to scratch The Wasp character completely but rather have Hope become the character, since Janet Van Dyne will most likely be too old to take part in any superhero action. So therefor, I believe that Janet will pass the Wasp mantel onto her daughter or Pym will take part in creating the Wasp with his daughter either by accident or intentionally.
As a fan of the Antman and Wasp story, the idea of this is actually pretty satisfying considering that I was upset when I first heard that they will focus on Lang rather than Pym, which obviously rules out Janet being the Wasp unless they really shook things up. Therefore I’m a satisfied fanboy if they still bring in the Wasp character via Lilly’s Hope Van Dyne.
What do you think movie fans? Do you think Lilly will eventually become the Wasp? Or would you rather them leave the character alone if it’s not Janet Van Dyne? Express your thoughts in the comment section!
