'Lucy' Review

'Lucy' Poster‘Life was given to us a billion years ago. What have we done with it?’

A young woman is mistakenly in the middle of a dark deal. Who then flips the sides on those who captured her while becoming a superhuman evolving past any human logic we ever imagined.

Let me just say that I went in super excited and pumped to see this, mainly because Scarlett Johansson is leading an action/sci-fi movie (unfortunately it’s not a Black Widow movie). I didn’t really care what the plot was or anything like that, I’ve just been wanting to see her become that badass female action star we know she is. But fortunately for us, the story of the movie was pretty interesting and definitely caught my eye.

Scarlett Johansson in 'Lucy'First let’s get the obvious out of the way. This Scarlett Johansson girl that everyone loves (myself included) can definitely and without any doubt lead a movie. Even though the opening act had her playing this young, party student who is scared out of her mind from the situation she’s in, I was still enjoying her act out the part. And then, then the real ass kicking began! As soon as that bag split right open, I couldn’t get enough of her Lucy taking names left and right with no hesitation whatsoever. This only adds to the evidence that Johansson has incredible star-power and can lead a thrilling action movie or any lead role for that matter (GET ON THAT BLACK WIDOW MOVIE MARVEL).

Scarlett Johansson in 'Lucy'The next thing worth mentioning is the premise of the movie. Girl mistakenly gets in the middle of something bad, something bad turns girl into super-human, super-human girl starts on the path of redemption and evolution. Sounds pretty badass, huh? In my memory, I can’t really think of anything that we’ve seen before that resembles Lucy, I feel like it’s a fresh and original idea for people to get excited for. The movie isn’t just about Lucy getting the revenge she deserves, but it’s a story about our evolution as people and what we can become. Nobody really expected that, it was a definite surprise and somewhat of a twist to keep everyone interested. Unfortunately for me at least, everything leading up to the immediate ending was almost wiped clean with a very sudden, strange, and unlikable ending in my opinion.

Scarlett Johansson in 'Lucy'It’s not that I didn’t like or get the ending, I did. I just think it was done completely wrong. (SPOILER) The whole thing with the rooms turning white and her ‘downloading’ herself to a giant computer that looks like alien tech, I just lost all interest at that point. Usually, film makers sometimes rush endings to make it good and get to the point. In this situation, it was the polar opposite and took way to long to get to that point.

Scarlett Johansson in 'Lucy'Don’t get me wrong, Lucy is a step in the right direction for action/sci-fi movies, especially on the visual effects side of it as they were incredible to look at. It was a great build up of a movie with each stake getting higher and higher as we watched. But unfortunately even with the amazing Scarlett Johansson (and she was amazing) in the lead kicking some ass, don’t expect a complete sci-fi revelation like Edge of Tomorrow. Expect a sci-fi action thriller that is smart enough to give you some fun summer entertainment, but at the same time will leave you a bit confused towards its closing credits.
