Comic Book 101: Get to know Yondu.

Yondu 2

The release date for James Gunn’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” is less than a month away. Marvel Studios is in the final stretch as far as the film’s marketing, giving us an extended trailer, multiple clips, and individual character posters. The marketing has focused on introducing audiences to members of G.O.T.G.  and their villains. Just recently are we getting our first look of the character “Yondu” played by actor “Michael Rooker” (The Walking Dead). This is a character that Director Gunn is very excited for audiences to see. Having worked with Rooker for a long time, I trust that Director Gunn’s vision. As a fan of Rooker’s work, seeing him as a character like “Yondu” is something I’m looking forward to.

It’s important to know that when it comes to Marvel Studios, don’t expect the characters to be exactly the same as they were in the books. In the comics, “Yondu” was a founding member of the Guardians of the Galaxy. But in James Gunn’s take, “Yondu” is not a founding member or even a member. He plays a father figure role towards Peter Quill a.k.a Star Lord (Chris Pratt), who ends up bringing the Guardians together.

Having took Peter away from his home after terrible events occurring during his childhood, “Yondu” raised him. Peter spent a lot of time with Yondu’s crew known as “The Ravagers”, an outer space up-to-no-good bike gang. You can guess how Peter gained his skills as a thief.

In the comics, “Yondu” was a blue Centaurian with a large red head fin. His weapon is a large bow and arrows that made of a special metal called yaka. The metal allows his arrows to change direction, making them very dangerous. “Yondu” has no superhuman physical powers, but does have a sixth sense that allows him limited empathc relationships with other lifeforms.

Clearly “James Gunn” has gone a different route with the appearance of “Yondu”. It never really mattered to me, therefore I think this Yondu that were gonna see looks awesome. I’ll definitely be looking for “Michael Rooker” to add his style to the character.
