When the first Mad Max came out back in the 70’s, it was one of the first of the sci-fi thrillers that was mixed with the post-apocalyptic world. The younger generation may have never heard of it, but the older generation misses it. Now both will get a chance to visit it, for the first time or again. We get our first look of the stars of Fury Road Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron via a magazine cover.
A reboot or present day sequel may never top what Mel Gibson and his Mad Max movies did way back then, but there is definitely a chance. This new reboot/sequel has some very encouraging signs that point to what could be a fantastic movie. First off, in my eyes, Tom Hardy is an absolute perfect choice for the character – an actual better fit than Gibson of the old ones. Now that may be because I am younger, but I think Hardy just absolutely kills it in everything. Second, two words – Charlize Theron. Over the last few years she has been in some badass and entertaining roles and this may top them all, she will kick total ass.
Below we see Tom Hardy as Max Rockatansky and Charlize Theron as Imperator Furiosa. The first look at both these characters together just gets me excited as all hell. They both can kick total ass and these are definitely roles where we will see that. Hardy is a badass, we know that. Theron can be, plus she has a mechanical arm! Totally in the realm of awesomeness!
The writer/director George Miller who brought this world to life did an interview and had the following to say:
“I wanted to tell a linear story–a chase that starts as the movie begins and continues for 110 minutes,” says the Australian writer-director. Fury Road features few digital effects and even less dialogue, he explains. “In this crucible of very intense action, the characters are revealed.”
Basically meaning that yes, this is a complete and straight forward action movie that will take you on one hell of a ride from start to finish. But it’s an action movie that develops and explores the characters through their actions and responses to certain circumstances throughout the movie. Which means that the meaning and symbolism that happens throughout the film will happen more naturally and more flowingly than rather just being straight forward with it.
This movie has already had a lot of money, time, and tons of effort put into it over a long period of time – it’s been in the works for a while. But that means that Miller and everyone in his camp is trying to get it right, perfectly right. They want to bring this world back to the big screen but in a more appealing way for the present day viewers, who seem to demand more. And if the crews and cast excitement and passion show in the final product after a long times work, this could end up as a post-apocalyptic thriller that stands out from the rest. I know my fingers are crossed for it!
Mad Max: Fury Road is set to open on May 15th, 2015. Written and directed by George Miller starring Tom Hardy as Max Rockatansky, Charlize Theron as Imperator Furiosa, Nicholas Hoult, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Zoe Kravitz, Riley Keough, and Josh Helman.
