We have been waiting a very long time for a legit live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie. A while back, we got that funky CGI/animation one titled TMNT – but we’ve been wanting a real one! We all know by now that we’re getting it, with Michael Bay behind it. Some new characters posters with our first real, clear shot of the turtles have been released. I’ll just say they are interesting.
There have been so many doubts, problems, and rumors revolving around this turtles movie. From origin changes to their age to no Splinter (don’t worry, he’s in it). We now know that they will be mutant turtles and not aliens (thank god), we just don’t know ‘how mutant’ they will be. We know Splinter and Shredder are in it, as they should be. What about their age? Well, it’s said that they will be teenagers, young turtles learning how to become the ninja turtles we know and love. Problem is, these new characters posters give me the complete wrong impression on them being teenagers – check them out below.
Correct me if I’m wrong, teenage years are thirteen to seventeen? Now I don’t know if turtles are different or not, but I have never seen a teenager (turtle or not) look the way these brothers are looking. They look like they are 25 and on steroids…look at Raphael’s arms! Now I get it’s a fictional world and all that, but it still has to be somewhat realistic and these shots just don’t make them look like teenagers.
I want this movie (and hopefully franchise) to succeed just as much as anyone. The casting of Megan Fox and Will Arnett was a great step, the first teaser trailer was another great step, but this movie just seems to keep putting the doubt into my head. Now, I’m an optimistic and won’t judge it until I watch it and come to a conclusion then – and although these posters are all kinds of awesomeness, I can’t get away from the fact that these turtles looks like maxed out body-builders. Yeah, the posters look cool, each one focuses on each of the turtles specific attributes. Michaelangelo has ray bands on his chest and Donatello looks like a total tech guy and is wearing a GoPro! But I just can’t seem to get away from what they look like physically.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m still going to give it a chance because there are elements that are good and it’s Ninja Turtles, but the expectations aren’t super high compared to some other movies. I feel like every time it makes a good step, something happens to take a step backward in my head. I hope it blows my expectations away and it turns out to be the fun, loving, entertaining, and creative world of the Ninja Turtles that we all know and love.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles opens on August 8th, 2014. Directed by Jonathan Liebesman and starring Megan Fox, Will Arnett, and William Fitchner with voices by Johnny Knoxville, Alan Ritchson, Jeremy Howard, Noel Fisher, and Pete Ploszek.
