Most of the general movie going audience is familiar with Marvel Studios and their on-going cinematic universe. Over the
span of six years we have seen more than half a dozen theatrical releases from Marvel Studios, which is now collaborated
with Disney. We have seen some of the most popular comic book characters come to life during this amazing accomplishment
in film. Most a these characters we have heard of before, like Thor and the Incredible Hulk. And people are just now
finding out who the Guardians of the Galaxy are but one future Marvel movie coming that may be throwing people off is
Ant-Man, which is set to release next year.
With the news of director Edgar Wright recenlty departing from the film there is a lot of talk about Ant-Man right now and what better time to give people a little insight into who the character is and what stories we might see in the theatrical release.
Now I am NOT a comic book expert but ever since I heard that they were making an Ant-Man film I was interested in
learning more about the character. Starting out as an average movie fan and not knowing much about the origin of some of
these characters gives me a unique perspective and allows me to be able to relate to other comic book beginners. So with
that in mind, who is Ant-Man? Where did this oddly named character come from and what is his place in the world of
Marvel? And more importantly; Why have they decided to bring him to the big screen?
Well it turns out that Ant-Man aka Hank Pym (or later on Scott Lang) is a very significant figure in the Marvel comics
and also was one of the founders of the original Avengers team. Along with Iron Man, Thor and the Hulk, Ant-Man and his
wife Janet Van Dyne (aka the Wasp) were “assembled” to deal with a similar story line that we saw in “The Avengers” film
involving Thor’s brother, Loki. One of the huge differences is the absence of Ant-Man and Wasp, with the addition of
Captain America. Although Captain America did join the Avengers later on in the comics, he was not a part of the original
line up until they found him buried in the ice. Ant-man (the Hank Pym version) is a very unique character in the sense that he doesn’t necessarily want to be a superhero, but events in life lead to him using scientific discoveries to do so while going back and forth from fighting villains to experimenting in his lab.
There is a lot of history in the Marvel comics involving Ant-Man/Hank Pym and almost too much to mention. Courtesy of marvel.wiki.com I have put together some meaningful information to give some insight into his origin.
“…Pym discovered a rare group of subatomic particles, which have become known as the “Pym Particles.” Pym was able, through the application of magnetic fields, to entrap the particles within two separate serums. One serum would reduce the size of persons and objects, and the other would restore them to their normal size. Pym tested the reducing serum on himself and discovered it was more powerful than he had expected: it reduced him to the size of an insect. Pym became entrapped in an anthill and was pursued by the ants within. He escaped and restored himself to his normal size with his other serum. Deciding that the serums were too dangerous to exist, Pym destroyed both of them.
However, weeks later he reconsidered his decision and began to recreate the serums, whose existence he then kept secret. Inspired by his experience in the anthill, Pym undertook a study of ants, and theorized that ants communicate through psionic / electrical waves transmitted through their antennae. After months of work, Pym succeeded in creating his first “cybernetic helmet,” which would enable him to communicate with ants through transmitting and receiving psionic / electrical waves. Thinking that someday he might want to use the shrinking potion on himself again, Pym also designed a protective costume for himself, Unstable Molecules and steel mesh.”
This information is drawn from the comic book story lines and doesn’t mean that they are going to take the same exact approach in the movie. Also, if things haven’t changed with Edgar Wright leaving, the cinematic version of Ant-Man is going to focus on the Scott Lang character who eventually becomes Ant-Man after stealing the suit and serum in order to commit crimes (to save his daughter however) but later on becomes a hero and joins the Avengers. This character is, as of now, going to be portrayed by Paul Rudd but like I said, who knows what is going on with the Ant-Man film after Wright and Marvel Studios parted ways.
Another significant aspect of Ant-Man/ Hank Pym is his relationship with Janet Van Dyne/ Wasp and how it influences most of his decision making. I am interested if and how they incorporate her into the cinematic world since Hank Pym will most likely be older (played by Michael Douglas) and Scott Lang will be carrying the Ant-Man mantle, as far as we know. The first time I was really exposed to Ant-Man was in the cartoon series The Avengers: Earth’s Mightest Heroes and in episode seven titled “The Man in the Ant Hill” it gives us an introduction to Ant-Man/Hank Pym, check out the clip below it is really awesome and gives you an idea of what Ant-Man is like and what he can do.
Ant-Man is set to release on July 17, 2015. Hopefully this information gives some people some insight into the world of Ant-Man and gets them a little excited to see the movie. Did you guys know about Ant-Man before this? If so, are you excited for this movie? Express your thoughts in the comment section.
