'Batman V Superman' Might Not Be 'Man of Steel' Sequel Anymore

'Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice' Official LogoWriter/director Kevin Smith, who is very good friends with our new Bat Ben Affleck, has all of sudden become the number one spokesman for all things Batman V Superman. He was the first to publicly comment/announce on the new Batman suit for Affleck and on the portrayal of Bruce Wayne/Batman will be playing. Now he has come out with some very interesting comments on the actual plot/story/set-up of Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice.

He first said this on the newly given title, “It’s a bit of a mouthful. And also, I don’t know why Batman V. Superman. Why not just throw the “s” in there? Or spell it or something like that. Or honestly, every comic book fan on the planet, who is a DC comic book fan, I think we all wanted to see Batman/Superman: World’s Finest.” The started to talk about the movie itself, “But look, they’re obviously beginning something, and there’s a stretch of these flicks. And so this is the beginning of the Justice League, as we all suspected as they were announcing that cast. We were like, ‘This is the beginning of a Justice League movie.’ From what I understand now, it’s no longer like, ‘This is Superman 2.’ They’re not doing these things. They’re doing like, ‘Here’s Man of Steel. Here’sBatman/Superman: Dawn of Justice.’ The next one is not like a sequel to one of the characters. They’re just going to keep building their universe for about five or six movies….But all of them…it’s supposed to tell one massive story, which is all Justice League oriented.” And that makes a lot of sense. If Zack Snyder is directing this and Justice League, he definitely seems to be the ‘godfather’ of the DC Universe so why not stretch it over so many movies?

Personal opinion, I’m not a fan. Since Superman is such complex character, especially following Man of Steel, I think a sequel movie with just him or having a true ‘Batman vs. Superman’ movie where it’s just them makes more sense. I understand rushing to get to JL because it’s been to long without one, but characters like Bats and Supes need at least one movie (together or seperate) to get their feet on the ground. I know we all know their story and it’s been told time and time again, but following what Snyder did in Man of Steel, it looks like we may be getting very different takes on each character from what we normally know.

If what Smith is saying is true, then it looks like the Justice League may be fighting together for many movies to come in the next decade. Meaning we may have to wait to see  Superman or any other character fight their own battles alone until that “one massive story” is over and done with.

What are your thoughts on Warner Bros./DC skipping character standalone movies and jumping right into multiple Justice League team-ups?
