Ever since the announcement of X-Men: Apocalypse that would follow this years X-Men: Days of Future Past, those behind this franchise have been saying that Apocalypse would pretty much be a sequel to X-Men: First Class and Days of Future Past, exclusively featuring the X-Men of the past. Now following the success of Days of Future Past, the filmmakers are apparently reconsidering and might be leaving some room for members of the future X-Men.
Simon Kinberg who wrote DOFP and is also writing Apocalypse, said in an interview, “It will focus primarily on the First Class cast, but it will certainly have some of the original cast involved, too.” Now Kinberg doesn’t exactly say which classic characters would make appearances, but following the ending of DOFP (SPOILER), my bet would be the fan favorites of Storm, Jean, and Cyclops.
Since in the original movies showed the X-Men already brought together and following the complete success of cleaning up continuity issues and setting up a new timeline that DOFP brought, it’s not out of the question that we could see younger versions of Storm, Jean, and Cyclops showing up – in fact, my bet has been on it from the beginning. With Prof. X, Beast, Wolverine, Mystique, Magneto already being seen in the past, great additions are definitely on the way. Quicksilver had a small part in Days of Future Past, but pretty much guaranteed to be a major character in the sequel because of how popular his role was. The true return and bigger role of Havok seems inevitable (one of my personal favorites), plus we haven’t had the chance to see the brotherly love or uncle/nephew relationship between Alex and Scott Summers that we all know and love. On top of including Quicksilver and Havok, director Bryan Singer has recently said that he would love to bring Nightcrawler and Gambit back to the big screen. We would most likely see a young version, much like Beast, of Nightcrawler since he was a bit older in X2. Also, the word is that Channing Tatum has officially signed on to play Gambit in upcoming X-Men movies, so that is pretty much set. Now that everyone loved seeing the classic characters return in the future, it only seems right to show the recruitment and origins to the table in Apocalypse for Storm, Jean, and Cyclops.
So there it is, my hopeful line-up for the upcoming X-Men: Apocalypse. Professor X, Beast, Wolverine, Mystique and Magneto (good or bad), Quicksilver, Havok, Gambit, Nightcrawler, Storm, Jean Grey, and Cyclops. Not only would we get to see the past characters grow even more, but the introduction of some of the most loved characters from the original X-Men films would just be one hell of a cherry on top of one damn good looking sundae.
X-Men: Apocalypse is set to open in theaters May 27, 2016.
