The talks are over, it’s officially confirmed that Channing Tatum will be starring as Remy LeBeau a.k.a. Gambit in an unknown future X-Men project. In an interview with Total Film at the X-Men X-Perience Global Tour, producer of ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’ Lauren Shuler Donner confirmed that Tatum will play Gambit. Donner described Tatum as a rogue and a rascal, very much like the character of Remy LeBeau. Donner also mentioned that Tatum being a southerner and having previously done action films was a plus. She believes Tatum will be a great Gambit.
I love this casting of Tatum as Gambit for the reasons Donner explained and more. Even before their talks began on the potential of bringing the X-Men character back to the big screen, Tatum expressed his desire to play Gambit. He revealed that he was working on his accent for the character (Gambit is from New Orleans) just in case the opportunity to play him presented itself. Tatum’s passion for the character is a big reason why I believe this will work. We know the G.I. Joe star can do action, he has a talent for comedy with his performance in 21 Jump Street, and is known as a ladies man in most his movies.
For those unaware of who Remy Lebeau a.k.a Gambit is, he’s a thief, a gambler, a woman lover and a very sarcastic individual. His mutant power is the ability to tap into the potential energy of an object and transform it into kinetic energy upon touching it. Take his signature playing cards for example, that when thrown by him releases energy explosively upon impact.
Gambit was previously played by actor Taylor Kitsch in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Kitsch did what he could, but the character was poorly written. Furthermore, Comic book fans criticized the filmmakers for several reasons on the character that included casting someone who didn’t have a southern accent. It’s unknown as to when Tatum’s Gambit character could appear in the X-Men films. Producer Lauren Donner did mention that Fox is really trying to bring a Gambit solo movie to the big screen. Tatum does have the star power and talent to hold his own movie. News of this casting brings them one step closer.
