Review: ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2’

Written by Jacob Bartley

Yes! It’s finally here and I am fresh out of my first viewing of ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2’ and here is my review so let’s get right into it.  For over a year I have been looking forward to this film but I recently was turned off by the abundance of marketing they have put into it.  It seemed like every day for the past month there has been a new clip, trailer, or some type of information regarding the movie and I tried to stay away as much as I could.  None-the-less Spider-Man is probably in my top three favorite comic book/super-hero characters and when the moment came to actually see it, my excitement went through the roof!

My overall impression is that I loved this movie! I want to see it again and give myself time to digest it before I compare it to other comic book films or even the Sam Raimi versions. But without giving much away I want to talk about some of the positives that I took out of it. I thought the focus of the story was very compelling and keeps the audience interested the entire time even if you aren’t a Spidey nerd.  It continues some of the story arcs in the first film such as Peter’s struggle with Gwen Stacey in his life and his constant search for more information on his parents but it also brought in numerous new story lines which will lead into future Spider-Man films.  The film did have a few cheesy moments but I think that is expected of comic book genre films due to the original comics being a little “out there” themselves. I was emotionally affected by this movie as well which is rare with a big blockbuster.  Overall, it took me on a great film experience and that is all that really matters.  The cast was amazing (especially Dane DeHaan), the script was good, the story keeps you emotionally invested, and there is a ton of action to keep everybody happy.  Great job Marc Webb and Sony! I look forward to the future of this expanded Spider-Man Universe.

I give ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2’ an 8/10.
