As far as war movies go, ‘Saving Private Ryan’ is one of my favorites, if not my favorite movie of that genre. Spielberg’s direction along with Hank’s performance is what mostly makes the film’s telling of World War II’s D-Day and the long shot mission to save one soldier deep behind enemy territory so well done. When reports surfaced about ‘Spielberg’ and ‘Hanks’ possibly coming together once again for a Cold War thriller project, as a movie fan in general one has to feel excited.
According to Variety, this Cold War untitled project already has Tom Hanks attached to star. The film tells the true story of James Donovan, an attorney who went behind the Iron Curtain during the Cold War in order to negotiate the release of a downed U-2 spy plane pilot. Hanks has previously starred in ‘Charlie Wilson’s War’ which was another Cold War theme. Should Spielberg sign on to direct, it would mark the fourth film collaboration between Spielberg and Hanks, with the previous three being ‘Saving Private Ryan’, ‘Catch Me If You Can’ and ‘The Terminal’.
This project is one of three currently up in the air for Spielberg’s next directorial. The other projects being the long delayed sci-fi action ‘Robopocalypse’ which just completed it’s re-write, or ‘Montezuma’ revolving around a Spanish conquest leader Hernan Cortes and the Aztec ruler Montezuma.
Spielberg’s films have been phenomenal, with the exception of ‘Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull’. Spielberg could end up directing all three projects and I wouldn’t complain. With the screenplay for ‘Montezuma’ still being worked on, it’s possible. As far as which one out of the three films will he direct next will come down to ‘Robopocalypse’ or this Cold War thriller. ‘Robopocalypse’ has just gotten re-write with fans waiting excitingly for a popcorn flick from Spielberg. The other untitled project has Tom Hanks attached to star.
Between ‘Montezuma’, ‘Robopocalypse’ and the untitled Tom Hanks project, which do you want to see the most? Or are you still waiting on Indy 5? Express your thoughts below!
