I previously wrote an article on Movie Talk Express regarding The Amazing Spider-Man 2 marketing and how I felt too much of the upcoming Spidey sequel was being revealed. Fortunately, this does not have anything to do with TASM2 (that I know of) but instead with the future cinematic universe that Sony is rather QUICKLY trying to establish.
For the past couple of months Sony has been viral marketing The Amazing Spider-Man 2 on The Daily Bugle Tumblr page, along with potential side plots in future films and several character’s existence in the cinematic universe. The latest posting (read below) suggests at the very least the existence and possibly an appearance later down the line in the cinematic universe of Cletus Kasady a.k.a. Carnage.
For those who aren’t familiar with Cletus Kasady or Carnage. If you have watched Raimi’s Spider-Man 3 and are familiar with Venom, picture someone with a similar mentality to The Dark Knight’s Joker who all of a sudden gets the same symbiote that transformed Eddie Brock into Venom, except the final product’s color is blood red and much more crazy.
Before he became Carnage, Cletus Kasady had violence all around him since his childhood. From attempted murder on his mother as a child, to burning down the very orphanage he was put into after his father killed his mother. Kasady is very much a psychopath and a homicidal sadist. He became a dangerous serial killer. After being captured and sent to prison for 11 murders, Kasady shared a prison cell with Eddie Brock. At the time of Kasady’s imprisonment Eddie Brock did not have his Venom symbiote. Eventually, the symbiote found it’s way back to Brock and he escaped prison. However, a bit of Venom’s symbiote was left behind in the form of an offspring and it found it’s way into Cletus Kasady’s bloodstream through a cut, thus Carange was born.
Carnage is very much an R-rated character but I believe Sony will bring him to the Big Screen. As I stated in a previous article (see Dredd Sequel & R-rated Comic Book Characters), movie studios aren’t in the business of having their Comic Book films be rated R. However, PG-13 has gotten much darker and violent in the recent years that it’s possible to have a pretty good take on a character like Carnage. Comic Book fans will have to temper their expectations though regarding if the character is true to the source.
As far as when Carnage would appear. I think his appearance will happen in the Venom solo movie that was announced not too long ago. Given Carnage’s origin and the story, I could see Carnage being a big enough threat for Venom. Remember in the comics, Spider-Man couldn’t even defeat Carnage alone, so in a desperation move Spider-Man made a truce with Venom to help defeat Carnage. A Venom movie that’s done right be a Comic Book/Thriller type movie with a DARK PG-13 rating. I could see Carnage’s introduction in the Venom movie, perhaps even one and done. But you never know, they could keep Carnage around, leading the next movie to be a Spider-Man/Venom team up against Carnage and other villains. This is all SPECULATION while keeping in mind that Sony is trying to stretch this Spider-Man cinematic universe as far as they can. It’s the only property they got.
Anyways, I’m happy to see Sony confirm Cletus Kasady’s existence in this universe. What they will do with the character next is anyone’s guess.
